The Unemployed Need Not Apply?

Since the beginning of this current recession, it is easy to see that the United States economy is in a great deal of trouble. This has sadly lead to over 6.2 million Americans being unemployed. Unfortunately for them now, it is not simply the daily issues of losing his or her job but it is a new battle dealing with bias employers. Employers do not want to hire the unemployed but rather hire people who are currently working.

I found an interesting newspaper article in USA Today supporting this particular issue, which is affecting so many unemployed Americans today, myself being one of them. The author brings up some very interesting points that I would like to share. He states that in just one week 427,000 new claims for job benefits were requested. Now add a little bias by the employers into the mix and see what comes out. His comment “Up-to-minute skills can be an asset… knowledge isn’t lost over night” says it in a nutshell. Anyone who thinks otherwise is being ignorant. He also mentions how almost every one knows someone with a beautiful resume and great skills that ended up losing his or her job by no fault of their own. This is very true. I feel it is becoming an epidemic when it is not only corporate companies being bias but also restaurant managers and even pet-sitters that are adopting this terrible attitude towards the unemployed.
He goes on by pointing fingers towards the critics that think any new laws protecting discrimination towards people who are “not currently working” are plain foolish. For example, New Jersey recently created a law that makes it illegal to exclude the unemployed in any help wanted listings. In fact, since June 1, 2011 there is a $10,000 fine towards any company doing so but the critics are stating that the law “lacks teeth”. The author believes that these critics are completely missing the point and I think that most of us would agree with the author as well.

I am in full support 100% with all of the author's arguments. I believe he is not just trying to be a voice for the unemployed but also trying to open the eyes of all American citizens. I think he is trying to show us that being bias towards the unemployed is being ignorant towards America.
